Research and planning: Location Reece
These are the location recce for the places we will be filming our trailer and how we will solve any of the problems that occur.
Research and planning: Mise en scene thoughts
As mise en scene is my topic area that I am focusing on I have decided to search some romantic scenery that would be possible to use and what would be ideal to use...
This type of scenery would be perfect for a romantic trailer as it is by the beach and looks like somewhere where a romance can happen, it looks like the ideal place to film a love story, but unfortunately this would be nearly impossible as in the city where I live there is no places that look at 'pretty' as this does by the beach so I would have to travel far to get to a place which looks like this.
On the other hand, this is a place where I would be able to go to film some scenes as this is in my local city 'Manchester' as it is around christmas time they put on the 'Christmas Markets' on so we would be able to go there and film some scenes which I think would look really effective and well thought out.
Research and planning: magazine prices
I have done some magazine price research to help me with producing my publication plan to see how much I would be able to sell my magazine for, I searched for these magazines in local supermarkets and the prices are around £3-£4, I think this would be an acceptable price to sell my magazine.

Research and planning: Plan for next lesson
Next lesson I am going to research my focused areas for my magazine task which are Mise en Scence and editing, I will look further into romance trailers and see how they have used the different locations to their advantage and get ideas for editing techniques as I think this is quite a difficult area.
Research and planning: Magazine analysis 2
Again you can clearly tell that this is a magazine and not a poster by the features included which are a masthead, coverlines, sub heading, barcode, main image etc.
- You can tell this is a fanstasy film by the first look at the magazine as straight away you noice the centred image of a male actor holding is hat and looking straight into the camera this is done through a medium shot. He is engaging you to read the magazine and shows that he has something to hide or something that he doesn't want you to know by the positioning of his arm on his head in leather gloves and a top hat which is not a typical outfit you would normally see which shows that the film is going to be fun.
- The colour scheme of this magazine is very bright and creative as it is a fansty film so it compliments the genre, the main colours used in this magazine are red, green and white which is a lot to do with nature and when I think of a fantasy film I think of the outdoors so this magazine is very well thought out.
- The masthead of the magazine stands out as it has been brought to the front of the magazine so the main image is placed behind this, this shows what the magazine is about and it clearly states that is it a 'film magazine' so this was they will be able to attract the right kind of audience for the film.
- The target audience for this film is both males and females as there is a variety of colours so doesn't attract a cetrain kind of audience, I would say the age range for this magazine would be 16
+
Research and planning: Magazine analysis 1
- This magazine is marketing and promoting a fantasty/romance /drama film, you can tell this by the layout and postioning of the actors.
- A film magazine would usually consist of a 3 colour scheme rule, and for this magazine it is true as the colours used are red, white and yellow, this is sterotypical for the genre of the magazine/film as these colours represent a mysterious feeling towards the audience which makes the magazine stand out as the colours used together are not very common.
- The masthead of the magazine is hidden behind the central image but it still stands out to the audience as it is all in capital font with white text which contrasts with the colour lining of black around this, as the background of the magazine is dull this brightens the effect of the magazine and gives it an edgy feel.
- The image which is placed centrally in the magazine is the main aspect as this is the most noticable feature as it is a long shot, there are 3 of the main actors inculded in the main, both males looking away and the girl looking straight ahead into the camera, again this makes the magazine look mysterious as you wonder why the male actors are looking away from the camera, maybe they are hiding something? and the girl doesn't know whats going on, this will keep the audience guessing which makes it effective.
- You can tell that this is a magazine and not a poster from the main features which include
Storylines
A barcode
A main image
The price of the magazine
A main film
- The main audience for this film would be for people who watch films all the time as this is clearly a 'film magazine', as the colour scheme is unusual this shows it is not for a set gender as these colours attract both males and females, the age range that would most likely buy this magazine is 20
+
Research and planning: Practical and impractical trailers
Impractical trailers
This type of trailer wouldn't be suitable due to the location shots of the film, as we do not live in an area where it has stunning views e.g. lakes so if we tried to create these locations it wouldn't be effective, also they are at a carnival which are specific events which may not happen around the time we are filming. There is also large country houses which look very expensive and we not not be able to shoot inside of these as the actors and myself and my group do not have these type of houses.
Practical trailers
This kind of trailer would be suitable to the trailer that I could make as the location in this film are very stereotypical for a romance trailer, the scenes are in a park which are easy accessible to me and also in large built up areas, this would also be easy to get to as we could use the location on Manchester to film these type of scenes which is just a train journey away. It looks like a typical trailer in the real world rather than a made up world with fancy locations and this would be good as this is what our trailer will be like as we haven't got the facilities to get to stunning areas.

Research and planning: Trailer Conventions
What to expect in a trailer...
- Lots of different shot types
- Different locations to film the scenes
- Summary of storyline but not giving away what actually happens
- Distribution company
- Production company
- Name of film
- Logo
- Editing techniques, if something bad is happening do jump cuts etc.
- Actors
- Text in between scenes to explain story
- A narrator
- Sound effects/music (score)

Research and planning: Production and distribution Companies
I am going to look at some production companies as there is usually an image of them placed somewhere inbetween the trailer, at the start or at the end.
Dreamworks is a company that produces quite a few animated films which usually have a cerficiate of a U or a PG. Some examples of the animated films this company has produced is Shrek 1 and 2 and also Chicken Run.
Fox searchlight pictures is an American Film distribution company within the Fox studios. This company has produced films such as Black Swan.
Now I have looked at some companies that have produced and distributed films I will now have to think about the image what I want the company logo to look like and the name of the company, I am going to try to relate this to the romance genre as this logo will be shown within my teaser trailer, I am also going to create my own as this will look more effective. I think I am going to make the logo quite simple looking but so that the audience can still tell that it is to do with the genre I have chosen.

Research and planning: Plan for the week
My plan for the week is upload my audience interview videos onto my blog and put my questionnaire results onto a powerpoint and upload it onto blogger through slideshare.
Research and planning: Film poster analysis 2
Genre
- You can tell again that this poster is advertising a romance film.
- The colours of the poster are your stereotypical love colours, red and white which symbolise what kind of genre this film is going to be.
- The expression on the womans face looks very joyful and happy with shows that the story is going to be fun and entertaining.
- The actor is a middle age, attractive woman.
- Her facial expression could mean two things from the poster and her positioning, she could either be in a very happy situation where she is loved up or she could be causing trouble within the film as she is looking down on photographs smiling so this will attract the audience.
- Her body language looks like she is incontrol of the film and she is a main actor and all the other actors are just placed in a photograph.
- The close up of the womans face in the image allows us to recognise that she is the main character and is incontrol of the film and from her facial expression you cant tell what her character is going to be like.
- The colours are plain and like any romance film usually, a white background with red font which makes the poster look bright.
- The lighting is very high key and the poster is very clear and looks professional, this shows that this could be a good romance story in the end as these colours resemble happiness.
- The font is also very stereotypical as it is a smooth curvy font like the font you would use in a love letter.
- The layout of the poster is very effective and unsual, as the girl looks like she has all the power and usually this is the male character so it shows that the story of the film could be very interesting.
- As it is a romance film I would say that the ages of the audience could be teenagers to middle aged woman and the primary audience would usually be females.
- Because it shows that the woman has the power this would get woman interested as they would not expect the story line to be like this and would want to see how the girl gets what she wants as then they could try and do the same as women always want power.
- As you can see from the poster the woman is incontrol as the male actors and some of the female actors are placed in photographs with a close up image of the womans face smiling and looking at them, this could be seen as bad or good.
Research and planning: Film poster analysis 1
Genre
- You can tell straight away that this film poster is a romance genre.
- The colours used within this poster are very suttle and nice colours to look at, they are not harsh, the colours yellow and white could be classed as peaceful and romantic
- You can see the connection between the two actors on the poster as they are positioned very close to each other and both are facing in the same direction with the same facial expression which is romantic.
- The two actors are young and attractive.
- Their body language makes them look cosy and have a very good relationship as they are cuddling in a romantic location.
- There is no eye contact between them both but you can still notice that romantic connection as they are both looking down at the same thing which shows they have interest in each other.
- The long shot of the two actors allows the audience to see that they have a close relationship which makes the audience involved in the film and feel happy emotion towards them.
- The colours are light and calm which gives a sterotypical view on this poster as this is what the colours should be as it is a romance poster.
- The lightening of this poster is high key as it looks like a sunny day on the beach to resemble happiness and show that they are proud of each other and want the world to see the connection they have.
- The font used is very basic and simple and goes with the colour scheme of the poster as they have used contrasting colours with the background.
- The layout of the poster is very simple but very effective as it has all the stereotypical features that a romance poster should have for example the name of the film, the names of the actors, the cast and crew etc.
- As the film is a romance this could be to an audience of a large age range because everyone loves a romance film to watch now and again, so the age range could be between 16-30+.
- As the picture shows the boy and a girl on the location of a beach every girl fantasies about sharing this moment with a boy so they could relate to this film.
- Most people watching this film will be in college/university or have a part or full time job.
- From this poster you can see that the two characters have a connection and their is going to be a love story involved in this film, by their facical expression is shows the audience that they may have to go through some tough experiences to get to this stage.
